Effective pest control measures

Pests are an inconvenience for homes, businesses and, above all, people. The heat has begun. With it the proliferation of rodents and insects that cause potentially serious infections in humans.

Pests not only affect people, they can also cause serious damage and disease to pets, plants or crops and are usually formed by insects, mites, nematodes, snails, birds or rodents.

Their effects are varied and occur in a chain. A pest can mainly affect the health of people and animals, causing diseases or infections, sometimes fatal. In turn, they can affect agricultural production, drinking water, food prices in the market, trade, food safety, nutrition, health and the environment. That is why pest control is so important and necessary.

When faced with the invasion of an office or home by these intruders, it is advisable to contact experts to ensure their complete extermination through effective control methods. Otherwise, their recurrence is more than likely and their effects unpredictable

Three types of pest control treatments

Specific pest control treatments are varied and require a specific process to ensure their effectiveness. In this sense, there are three types of measures:

Active treatments.

This type of pest control formula is based on extermination. A forceful measure that is applied when the pest is out of control and its harmful effects directly affect the normal development of daily activity and the economy. Treatment can be based on:

  • Eco (or ecological) measures: This is a very recurrent system in rustic and agricultural environments. It consists of the use of predatory animals that kill the pests when they are at a lower level of the food chain.
  • Measures with the use of chemicals: With the use of toxic chemical products and compounds that poison and kill the pest in a forceful way.
  • Thermodynamics: Sometimes, temperature variation destroys insects without the use of products or predators. This measure is the least invasive of all.

Passive treatments:

This type of measure is intended to prevent damage to the invasive or pest species. This technique is based on closing or sealing burrows, cracks, nests or open spaces through which insect or animal pests are gaining access to the infested site.

Preventive treatments:

Based on the use of hygiene and disinfection products that repel insects or rodents. These measures are the most commonly used by professional cleaning and disinfection companies, especially in buildings, premises or homes where there have already been repeated cases of pests. This pest control treatment aims at extermination or the use of chemicals that could affect other animals such as pets or the users of the environment.

Increase in pests due to climate change

Climate change is changing the natural structures and controls that have been in place for years. The increase in greenhouse gas concentrations has caused an unstoppable rise in air and ocean temperatures and, with it, a global warming that has forced people to rethink their general behavior with respect to the planet.

This phenomenon has also affected the general behavior of insect pests, microorganisms, birds and rodents. An effect that, since 2018, has begun to be very noticeable in agriculture and housing.

The emergence of new, previously non-existent pests is becoming commonplace, as changes in pest life cycles are causing them to proliferate in a more aggressive and noticeable way. For this reason, pest control has become one of the most important hygiene and protection measures of recent times.
